Back in August, StayUp.News editor-in-chief Roberto E. Alejandro had the opportunity to sit down with Brooklyn, NY-based artists Fury Young (left, in the picture above) and Dr. Israel (right) to discuss their concept EP (and future LP) ‘Die Jim Crow.’ The project tackles the issue of mass incarceration, incorporating the perspectives and musical talents of incarcerated and formerly incarcerated artists, with some of the music even recorded inside prisons.
In our interview, Fury and Doc discuss the importance of hearing directly from people who have actually been incarcerated on the issue of mass incarceration, the similarities between incarceration and slavery in the Americas, as well as their approach to structuring a concept album using various genres of music from the African diaspora. Also, don’t forget to check out the book, based on the EP: Die Jim Crow
