StayUp.News editor-in-chief Roberto E. Alejandro recently traveled to New York City for a conversation with the authors of 2011’s Pedagogy of the Poor, Willie Baptist and Dr. Jan Rehmann. Baptist is a formerly homeless father whose activism began with the Watts riots, and is currently the Poverty Initiative’s scholar-in-residence and the co-coordinator of poverty scholarship and leadership development for the Kairos Center/Poverty Initiative; Rehmann teaches philosophy and social theory at Union Theological Seminary and the Free University of Berlin, while also serving as the director of the doctoral program for Union.
In our interview, Baptist and Rehmann touch on the genius and knowledge production that exist in poor spaces, the problem of how elites achieve consent for their rule, and how we can bridge theory and grassroots social movements.
