“It’s the Same Shit, Different City.” Detroit’s Phat Kat on New Album, Gentrification in the Motor City

Alejandro recently sat down for a phone conversation with Detroit’s Phat Kat (above in a photo by Kelly Connelly), for a discussion about his new album, produced in conjunction with Berlin’s DJ Dister, “The S.O.S. Project” (“So Old School”), available on April 14th from Below System Records. In addition to discussing the album, Phat Kat also touches on Detroit’s transformation during the crack era, and how poor Black neighborhoods are being left behind as the Motor City undergoes a process of gentrification.
